The world in which we live today is that of glamour and fashion. This is a fact applicable both on machines and human beings. Motorcycle HID Lights are a type of utility which give stylish look to the motorcycle riders and they prefer it because it adds glamour to the attire and look of a motorcycle. These lighting systems have become a basic tool in style among the riders circle within the last few years. These HID lights can throw light far down the road and to the sides in a way they are not comparable to any modern halogen light system. The HID technology has considerably climbed the ladder of success in the past few years and this true by the fact that is proven by reduction in price significantly. The other reason for riders, choosing this type of enhancement is motorcycle’s visibility to other drivers. The HID light uses an arc of light similar to high intensity stadium lighting. But contrary to stadium lights, this lighting system uses extremely high voltage (18-25 thousand volts) to initiate the arc, so that no warm up time is required. It output is equal to 4100 degree Kelvin compared to 2800 degree Kelvin produced by a typical halogen filament lamp. This gives a daylight white bluish light that produces more than thrice the lumens as compared to halogen light, while consuming only about 50 watts of power (35-watts for the bulb, 15-watts for the ballast). Once the light is running at its full intensity (about 1-1.5 seconds), the regulator then provides a consistent 90 volts to maintain the arc.
This state of the art system does not use a filament like halogen light, on the contrary it creates light by zapping an arc between two electrodes. This arc excites xenon gases, igniting metallic salts. When the reaction takes place and gives an intense white light. The HID lights has power consumption of about 3.5 amps continuous draw compared to about 10 amps of usage by a standard halogen light? The life of HID light is on average about 3000 hours compared to the halogen’s 750 hour life, and surprisingly it’s not even affected by vibrations or rough road conditions.
It is very important to consider two factors for proper HID light’s usage. Firstly focal point, secondly aiming of the light. By “focal point”, I mean the exact horizontal/vertical positioning of the light filament as places in the reflector cover. It is essential that the HID light’s “filament” where the arcing occurs should be in the same exact position that the factory light’s filament is placed. Failure to get this proper focal point results in a considerable decrease in light output performance. But to attain proper focal point, or otherwise, the base of the HID bulb has been modified to reproduce the base of the stock motorcycle lights.
The second important thing is properly aiming the headlights takes on a whole new meaning when you’re thinking about HID lighting. It is essential that your headlights are aimed perfectly. This can not be emphasized strongly enough. When driving on a two-lane country road, improperly aimed HID headlights can be very dangerous to the oncoming traffic. Experience has shown that in the case of HID lighting, you can slightly lower the aim of the headlamps from default settings and still take in great improvement over halogen systems, while at the same time eliminating possible troubles to oncoming traffic.
