motorcycle zen book
anyone in here read Zen and the art of motorcycle maintenance?

i wanted to like because josh waitzkin recommended it, all the book hype called it profound, a masterpiece, etc and so many people liked it. i do think its one of the few book i may re read but i didnt find it as appealing as i thought i would, mainly because i thought he was gonna present a solution to this blending of technology and quality, or a marriage between eastern and wester philosophy -a blending of Hegel and Tao te Ching but I found nothing like that, someone please tell me did i miss something profound or what?

It’s a well-intentioned but misleading effort to show how the principles of Zen apply in modern life.

It’s misleading because there are no principles of Zen.

There’s just practicing and awakening and living with wisdom and compassion. To make things worse, wisdom and compassion have no inherent meaning – just live in each moment with clarity and an intention to help.

So the foundation of “Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance” is flawed at the start.

Still, it’s an engaging story and has brought many people to Buddhist practice, where they’ve discovered the real thing.

In his now classic Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, Robert Pirsig brings us a literary chautauqua, a novel that is meant to both entertain and edify. It scores high on both counts. Phaedrus, our narrator, takes a present-tense cross-country motorcycle trip with his son during which the maintenance of the motorcycle becomes an illustration of how we can unify the cold, rational real…

Long before Jack Kerouac penned his famous American road trip epic, Sinclair Lewis wrote what may in fact be the seminal work of the genre. This cheerful little road novel, published in 1919, is about Claire Boltwood, who, in the early days of the 20th century, travels by automobile from New York City to the Pacific Northwest, where she falls in love with a nice, down-to-earth young man and gives …
